University Of The People, Higher Education For All
The United Nations Opens The First Tuition Free University
Education is a right, not a privilege and the UN is helping to make it so.
The University of the People, an online, tuition-free university is the first of its kind, ever.
Their Mission is clear:
“The University of the People is a nonprofit organization devoted to providing universal access to quality, online post-secondary education and is comprised of numerous volunteers from all around the world. Many of these volunteers are regular members of university departments; others are active professionals - business administrators, librarians, computer programmers, economists and educators.
Our fundamental belief is that all people, world-wide, should have the opportunity to change their lives and contribute to their communities, as well as understanding that the path to societal and individual prosperity is through education.
We are confident that our collective efforts as volunteers can be decisive in developing and executing the programs through which many people all over the world will have the opportunity to receive higher education.”
The only Fees are for examination processing, and the university itself is accessible to anyone with internet access, a growing online community for an ever shrinking world.
The learning model of the online university mirrors that of a classic classroom in many ways. Did you ever have a teacher tell you not to be afraid to ask questions? This is why- students learn from each other; the UOP builds on that understanding and uses an open-source internet model to facilitate peer-to-peer education, with plenty of guidance and support of course.
Here’s what they have to say about it:
“Comprised of students from around the world, the student body will learn through peer-to-peer teaching with support of respected scholars. Within the online study communities, students will share resources, exchange ideas, discuss weekly topics, submit assignments and take exams.”
The university currently offers two programs, a Business Administration Program and a Computer Science Program both of which are awaiting accreditation. While the UOP is still in its infancy, what better way to grow the students of the world than through a free, open source, peer-to-international-peer university program?
