Strong Roots, Phat Beets

I attended a fundraiser about 3 weeks ago; Phat Beets Produce was great then and is still great today.

The good news is that good things happen every day; the bad news is that I simply can't keep up with it all!

The fundraiser I attended was called Turnip Dem Beets. (Get it!?) We danced, we ate, we tasted tea and fresh juices, it was an all around good experience.

The good that the organization is doing though is even better!

Phat Beets Produce has implemented a system St. Martin De Porres Catholic School in Oakland, California.
The system enables families in an urban area to have access to fresh, affordable organic produce- good food.

Their mission statement is clear:
They aim “to provide equal, affordable access to organic fresh fruits and vegetables, grains and legumes to North Oakland families through wholesale pricing.

Supported by community events, Phat Beets facilitates youth in leadership roles engaging their peers in healthy eating and nutrition discussions through fruit and vegetable sampling.

Phat Beets works to connect small farmers to urban communities via the creation of farm stands and farmers markets in local establishments.”

They’ve started their work in a school. Families can pick up their kids, and their dinner. What better way to get kids eating well? The organization is introducing new and familiar fresh produce into families’ diets and helping to combat early life diseases like diabetes and conditions such as childhood obesity; the system they are implementing is a great way to encourage a sense of community, and to enjoy tasty foods. Phat Beets does a lot more than sell veggies and feed families.

It is so important that with all the opportunities to contribute to our global community, we keep in mind that our local communities are often in need as well. Phat Beets Produce is doing a great thing in that way. Contributing to local community by building a sense of responsibility and care.

Great work folks! I’ll see you next time- as long as you keep bringin’ the beats- ahem, and the beets!
