Cookin' Up Something Good
I went out after work tonight. I didn't go out for drinks or a coffee, I went out to cook.
A friend of mine and I went downtown to the LA Downtown Women's Center and we made meatloaf, green beans, baked potatoes and strawberry shortcake (with hand whipped whipped cream!!) for the lovely ladies of the DWC to have for lunch tomorrow.
In about the same amount of time that it takes me to drive to and from work, I was able to help a lot of people out, and enjoyed myself enough to want to do it some more .
We were told that we had just cooked a meal for about 80 to 90 women, and had relieved the staff and other volunteers who handle various daily tasks and stresses, of a couple extra hours' kitchen work. We were also told we made record time (pat on the back thankyouverymuch speed cookers).
My friend and I, feeling inspired, have decided to do this more. It was easy, a two hour commitment to hang out with some fun folks and cook together for people who don't currently have the means to do it for themselves. And it turns out it's pretty easy to sign up and do.
If you live in the LA area, and doing something good like this interests you, have a look at their Volunteer Opportunities Guide and get to it! If you're just glad it's out there I think that's something good too.
If you don't live in the LA area and you want to do something like this, try typing "volunteer opportunities women's center" into Google, I got a ton of resources when I did it!
If you have any questions, give me a holler I'm always happy to chat.
